Bridges Settlement, named after William Bridges of Tennessee, was the first settlement in Denton County and the first to be located within what is now The Colony. It was later named Stewartsville after Willis Stewart. Many of the original colonists (including William Bridges) are buried in Bridges Cemetery in The Colony’s eastern portion, although the cemetery is on private land and not open for public viewing. Future land developers envisioned a “dream city” modeled after Dallas. Dave Fox of Fox & Jacobs began to build homes in 1974, naming the streets after the original landowners. The Colony was incorporated in 1977.
“The City by the Lake” was named Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary “Sports Town for the State of Texas” and is applauded by D Magazine, a Dallas-Fort Worth publication that ranks metropolitan suburbs based on such factors as diverse and affordable housing, low crime rates and quality education. The Colony’s outstanding quality of life hit the publication’s Top 10 list at number six. Two beautiful lakeside recreation parks, Hidden Cove and Stewart Creek, enhance the city’s quality of life. Both provide excellent outdoor recreational opportunities, such as camping, fishing, boating and more. Numerous special events including the Annual 4th of July Liberty K5 by the Lake, parades, concerts and fireworks displays, Barbecue and Salsa cook-offs, Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Haunted Hayride, and Mother and Father’s Weekend Specials add to the quality of life. The new Five Star Complex is host to adult and little league teams of soccer, football, T-ball, softball, and baseball. The Veterans Memorial is in the center of the complex and is a touching tribute to the Veterans whose names are etched in stone and placed in the memorial.
The Colony residents enjoy being nestled between Dallas and Fort Worth and are within minutes of major attractions such as Six Flags Over Texas, Wet and Wild, the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos. In addition to numerous lakes and museums, residents can also enjoy major sporting events, which include Dallas Cowboy Football, Stars Hockey and Texas Rangers Baseball. More local attractions include the Bayless-Selby House Museum, the Courthouse-on-the Square Museum and Hangar 10 Flying Museum, Inc. All this and more add up to a winning way of life for residents of The Colony.
